Your winning bid is not the final price of an auction vehicle. On top of the bid, you pay IAAI buyer fees and other charges that can add hundreds of dollars. In this guide, Metro Money Financial explains each fee. That way, you can plan your budget before you bid.
What Are IAAI Buyer Fees?
IAAI buyer fees are charges that IAA adds to every vehicle you buy. The main one is the buyer fee, and it follows a tiered structure. In other words, the higher the sale price, the higher the fee.
However, the exact amount also depends on your account. For example, public buyers and licensed business buyers follow different fee schedules. Your purchase volume can also change the schedule that applies to you.
Other IAAI Buyer Fees on Your Invoice
The buyer fee is only one part of the total. Besides that fee, your invoice usually includes several other charges.
Internet Bid Fee
If you win online, IAA adds an internet bid fee. It changes depending on whether you bid live or with a proxy bid. Like the buyer fee, it also grows with the sale price.
Service Fee
As of July 1, 2026, IAA charges a service fee of $105 per vehicle. In short, it covers handling, such as imaging, pull-out and loading.
Environmental Fee
IAA also adds an environmental fee of $15 per vehicle. This fee covers handling the vehicle according to environmental rules.
Title Handling Fee
In addition, IAA charges a title handling fee of $20 per vehicle on its standard schedule for non-licensed buyers.
Taxes and Broker Fees
Depending on the state and your buyer type, sales tax may apply. Also, if you buy through a broker, the broker charges its own fee on top of IAAI buyer fees.
Extra IAAI Buyer Fees You Can Avoid
Some charges only appear when something goes wrong. Fortunately, you can avoid all of them with good planning:
- Late fee: $50 or 2% of the sale price, whichever is greater. It applies if you miss the payment deadline.
- Storage fees: they start when the free storage period ends. Each branch sets its own rate.
- Renege fee: $1,000 or 15% of the sale price, whichever is greater. It applies if you do not pay within seven calendar days.
For U.S. buyers, payment is due by 5:00 p.m. branch time two business days after the award. Buyers outside the United States have four business days. Therefore, paying early is the easiest way to keep your costs low.
How to Estimate Your Total Cost
Before you bid, add every charge to your maximum bid. A simple formula looks like this:
Bid + buyer fee + internet bid fee + service fee + environmental fee + title handling fee + taxes = total cost
The fixed charges alone add up quickly. For instance, the service, environmental and title handling fees total $140 per vehicle. Then you add IAAI buyer fees and the bid fee, which depend on the sale price. As a result, the final cost can be much higher than the bid itself.
Keep in mind that IAA can update its fees at any time. The amounts in this article reflect the schedule in effect as of October 2026. For that reason, always review the final amount on your invoice before you pay.
Tips to Keep IAAI Buyer Fees Under Control
You cannot skip IAAI buyer fees, but you can manage your total cost. Follow these tips:
- Set your limit with fees included. Decide the most you want to spend in total, then work back to your maximum bid.
- Compare vehicles by total cost. Two cars with similar bids can have different fees.
- Pay on time. Late fees and renege fees are the easiest charges to avoid.
- Pick up quickly. Arrange transportation as soon as your payment posts.
- Review your invoice. Check every line before you send your payment.
