Copart Payment Deadline: How Many Days Do You Have to Pay?

You just won a vehicle on Copart, and the clock is already running. The Copart payment deadline is short, so missing it can cost you money or even the vehicle. In this guide, Metro Money Financial explains how much time you have and which fees apply. We also share tips to pay on time.

What Is the Copart Payment Deadline?

The Copart payment deadline is three business days, and the day of the sale counts as the first day. For example, if you win on a Monday, you should pay in full by Wednesday. Weekends are not business days. So, if you win on a Friday, your deadline usually moves to Tuesday.

Payment becomes due as soon as the sale ends. Therefore, the best time to start is the same day you win, not the last day of the window.

What Happens If You Miss the Copart Payment Deadline?

Missing the Copart payment deadline does not cancel your purchase right away. However, the costs start to grow quickly.

Late Payment Fee

If you do not pay in full within three business days, Copart adds a $50 late fee per vehicle. This fee applies on top of the sale price and your other fees.

Relist Fee

If the vehicle is still unpaid after eight calendar days, including the sale day, Copart can relist it. In that case, you owe a relist fee of 10% of the sale price, with a minimum of $600. If you have a deposit on file, Copart can take the fee from it. In addition, your bidding privileges can be suspended until you pay.

Storage Fees

Storage charges are separate from the payment deadline. They begin when the free storage period ends, and the daily rate depends on each yard. As a result, a late payment often leads to a late pickup and even more charges.

Copart vs IAAI Payment Deadlines

Many buyers bid on both Copart and IAAI, so it helps to compare the two. Although the rules look similar, the details are different.

CopartIAAI
Payment window3 business days, including the sale dayBy 5:00 p.m. branch time, 2 business days after the award (4 for buyers outside the U.S.)
Late fee$50 per vehicle$50 or 2% of the sale price, whichever is greater
Final penaltyRelist after 8 calendar days: 10% of the sale price, $600 minimumRenege after 7 calendar days: $1,000 or 15% of the sale price, whichever is greater

In short, both auctions expect fast payment. Also, the final penalty is much higher than the late fee in both cases. That’s why it pays to act early.

How Your Payment Method Affects the Deadline

The method you choose can decide whether you meet the deadline. For instance, a wire transfer must arrive and post before Copart considers the lot paid. International wires usually take longer because they pass through more than one bank.

Copart also separates secured and unsecured payments. Secured payments include wire transfers, cashier’s checks, certified checks and money orders. Meanwhile, credit and debit cards count as unsecured payments. In general, the buyer fee is lower when you pay with secured funds. So, the right method can save you time and money.

Tips to Meet the Copart Payment Deadline

A little planning keeps you far from late fees. Follow these simple tips:

  • Calculate your total before you bid. Include the buyer fee, the gate fee and other charges, not just the bid.
  • Have your funds ready. If you need to move money between banks or countries, start before the auction.
  • Mark your deadline. Count three business days, including the sale day, and set a reminder.
  • Keep every receipt. If a payment does not post on time, your receipt helps fix the problem.
  • Plan your pickup. Once the payment posts, arrange transportation to avoid storage fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Sale Day Count Toward the Copart Payment Deadline?

Yes. The sale day counts as the first of the three business days. For that reason, you have less time than many buyers expect.

Do Weekends Count?

Weekends do not count toward the three business days. However, the eight-day relist window counts calendar days, so weekends do count there.

Can I Pay From Mexico?

Yes. Many of our customers buy from Mexico. Our team offers remote support and helps you complete your payment from our El Paso offices.

What Is the Most Expensive Mistake?

Letting a vehicle reach the relist stage. The relist fee starts at $600, which is far more than the $50 late fee.
